The EU’s Innovative Health Initiative (IHI) has issued its eighth call for proposals, focusing on medical technology solutions for cardiovascular disease, osteoarthritis, and patient-centred endpoints enhanced by digital health technologies. Proposals are due by October 10, 2024, for regulatory sandboxes that support breakthrough innovations in the EU.
These sandboxes create safe environments for regulators and industry to navigate complex regulatory frameworks, particularly for advanced technologies like artificial intelligence (AI).
Shortlisted consortia will have until April 23, 2025, to submit full proposals. Successful projects must deliver:
- A horizon scan identifying sandbox candidates and their role in current frameworks.
- An analysis of the impact of sandboxes on innovation in science and health tech.
- Recommendations for using sandboxes to guide healthcare innovation.
A total of €47.6 million is available from IHI, with an additional €49 million from industry partners.
IHI is a public-private health partnership funded by the European Commission and life science industry and partners. More information is available on the IHI website.
