As debate continues over how tightly artificial intelligence (AI) should be regulated in Europe, the European Commission is moving ahead with practical funding measures. Through seven calls under the Digital Europe Programme, it has opened a €63.2 million package to support AI in healthcare, advanced digital skills, and online safety. The initiative aligns with the EU’s broader ambition to accelerate adoption under its AI policy agenda while maintaining a strong regulatory framework.
For medical device and digital health stakeholders, the message is clear: Brussels is not only writing rules, but also investing in the capabilities needed to make AI workable in real settings. The funding supports the EU’s push to become a leading AI market and to encourage organisations to consider AI as a practical solution when designing services, systems, and policy responses.
The following fields are funded:
- A dedicated €9 million call will support AI-powered image screening in medical centres. The focus is on scalable, cloud-based systems for analysing medical imaging data.
- Another €12.5 million will go toward advanced digital skills training, including health AI education for healthcare professionals, researchers, and technical specialists.
- The package also includes €8.5 million for digital solutions that help organisations comply with EU rules.
- The largest health-related share – €24.4 million – is tied to the European Health Data Space (EHDS). The aim is to strengthen digital health services, improve the quality and cross-border use of health data, and help public authorities and providers build the capacity needed to implement EHDS requirements.
