The World Health Organization (WHO) launched the Medical Devices Information System (MeDevIS) platform on July 8, 2024. This open-access database provides details on 2,301 medical device types and standardizes device nomenclature, helping governments, regulators, healthcare providers, and payers make informed decisions.
MeDevIS is designed to simplify research and decision-making by offering a centralized source of international device information. It supports the development of national procurement, reimbursement, and facility planning lists. Previously, device data came from scattered sources, making reliable access difficult. By focusing on two naming systems—the European Medical Device Nomenclature (EMDN) and the Global Medical Device Nomenclature (GMDN)—MeDevIS improves data accessibility, especially in countries like the US, Canada, the UK, and Australia.
The platform allows users to search by device name, purpose, or category, offering details on healthcare system requirements, infrastructure needs, and the device’s intended use. Categories are based on WHO’s Priority Medical Device lists and other resources, aligning with the organization’s mandate to provide evidence-based health technology guidance.
Inspired by the success of its Essential Medicines List, the WHO aims to further expand and enhance MeDevIS through collaboration with global partners and stakeholders. MeDevIS can be accessed here.
